Chinese Researchers Achieve Breakthrough in Solid-State Battery Technology

Researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with CATL, have announced a significant breakthrough in solid-state battery technology. The new battery achieves an energy density of 500 Wh/kg, nearly double that of current lithium-ion batteries.

The breakthrough centers on a novel sulfide-based solid electrolyte that maintains high ionic conductivity at room temperature while eliminating the flammability risks associated with liquid electrolytes. The battery has demonstrated over 1,000 charge-discharge cycles with less than 10% capacity degradation.

Key advantages of the new technology include:

  • 500 Wh/kg energy density (vs. 250-300 Wh/kg for current Li-ion)
  • 10-minute fast charging capability
  • Operating temperature range of -30°C to 80°C
  • Inherent safety with no thermal runaway risk

CATL has announced plans to begin pilot production in late 2025, with commercial availability expected by 2027. The technology could enable EVs with ranges exceeding 1,000 km on a single charge.
